P-51D “Old Crow” Mustang – Tribute Wrap

P-51D Old Crow Mustang Tribute Wrap

Every now and then, a project comes through the workshop that ends up being more than just a colour change. This Roush Supercharged Mustang was one of those builds.

What started life as a dark grey Mustang, evolved into something with a lot more personality — a rolling tribute inspired by one of the most recognisable fighter aircraft of World War II, the legendary P-51D Mustang known as “Old Crow”.

For aviation enthusiasts, the name Old Crow carries history behind it. The aircraft was famously flown by Clarence “Bud” Anderson, a triple ace fighter pilot of the United States Army Air Forces during WWII. Anderson became known for both his combat success and the unmistakable look of his aircraft, with the polished metal body, bold markings and aggressive nose art becoming iconic over the decades that followed. Even today, the Old Crow P-51 remains one of the most photographed and recreated warbirds in aviation history, admired not just for what it represented in the air, but for the raw visual presence it carried on the ground.

Over time, that aircraft has inspired more than just aviation restorations. Car builders and Mustang enthusiasts around the world have drawn inspiration from the fighter plane, creating tribute builds that blend automotive styling with the unmistakable warbird aesthetic. This particular project was inspired by one of those tribute Mustangs — and from there, we put our own spin on it once again.

The wrap was carefully planned, colours compared over and over, and some even custom printed – just to make it as accurate as possible … the design adapted to suit the body lines and proportions of this Mustang while still preserving the spirit of the Old Crow theme. The satin silver finish references the bare aluminium appearance of the original aircraft, while the bold yellow/red checker front section, red rear quarters and military-style markings tie the whole concept together.

As the wrap progressed, the car slowly transformed into something that genuinely looks like it belongs on a runway.

Projects like this are also a reminder that wrapping is often about more than simply changing colour. Sometimes it becomes storytelling through design. A car can reflect history, personality and inspiration all at once, and when everything comes together properly, the result becomes something people stop and look at twice.

This build may have started with inspiration from a legendary aircraft, but the final result has become its own thing entirely. And those are the projects that end up being the most rewarding.
